acs martial arts: stopsley jujitsu
Welcome to the ACS Martial Arts Stopsley site. ACS Martial Arts offers junior and adult jujitsu martial arts classes, including elements from Geoff Thompsons's Real Combat System and real world self defence tuition as well as Boxercise and Boxfit sessions. The sessions based at Stopsley were transfered to ACS MAGFA's new Taylor St premises in October 2014. This jujitsu club and many of it's predessors have links with Stopsley going back to the 1990s and it's because of this long tradition and the fact that many of our students are Stopsley based that this site lives on.
For those who don't know, Stopsley was originally a hilltop village and is a ward situated in the north-east of Luton. The original civil parish of Stopsley village became a part of Luton when the boundaries were extended in 1933.
It's believed that the name Stopsley, comes from the saxon Scrobbale, meaning scrapes or scroppeslie and the Norman Shrubsley, meaning a hill covered with scrobbes, shrubs or underwood. The village of Stopsley has an infants, junior and secondary school, although Stopsley high is now a designated sports college, a pub (there were 3 about fifteen years ago) and a couple of churches.
Stopsley is also home to the new Inspire: Luton Sports Village, a fantastic sports complex complete with Olympic sized swimming, diving facilities, fitness suites, sports halls and a variety of sporting clubs. Situated along the A505 Hitchin Rd this new sports centre replaces the original St Thomas's Rd based Luton Regional Sports Centre in 2012.
In the centre centre of Stopsley village is the Stopsley War Memorial, dedicated to those Stopsley parishioners who lost their lives during the two great wars.
jujitsu and stopsley....
ACS Martial Arts is only one of many jujitsu clubs that have been based in Stopsley over the years. There has been a ju-jitsu club with connections to several different instructors for over 30 years.
The late Bob Cowan of International Atemi Jujitsu originally trained at Stopsley and the BBC2 programme, 'See Hear', did a feature on Sensei Kevin Brown, who used to run a club at the same venue. Sensei David Brown (no relation to Kevin) opened a junior club in the same martial arts room in February 2008 followed by an adult club in March 2009. These clubs have since relocated to ACS MAGFA in Taylor St Luton
